Paint Correction and Polishing in Portland

Paint correction is the machine polishing process that removes swirl marks, holograms, oxidation, water spot etching and light scratches from your vehicle's clear coat, so the paint looks deep and glossy again instead of hazy and scratched. At Custom Details it is performed in-house at our shop at 3433 SW Multnomah Blvd in Portland, either as the single stage correction included in our Exterior Detail + Polish package from $499, or as a multi stage correction quoted after we inspect and measure your paint.

This page explains what correction fixes, the difference between single stage and multi stage work, what is included in the $499 package, why we always correct paint before installing a Feynlab ceramic coating or Global Films paint protection film, and what no polisher can fix.

What paint correction actually fixes

Modern vehicles are painted in layers: primer, a color coat, and a clear coat on top that provides the gloss and the UV protection. Almost every defect you can see on a daily driven car lives in that clear coat. Paint correction uses a machine polisher, a graduated set of pads and abrasive compounds and polishes to level a microscopic amount of clear coat, taking the surface down to the bottom of the defect so the light reflects evenly again.

Correction is the right fix for:

• Swirl marks: the spider web of fine scratches you see in sunlight, usually from automatic brush washes, dirty wash mitts and drying towels.
• Holograms and buffer trails: the wavy, three dimensional marks left behind by a rotary polisher used with the wrong pad or technique, common after dealership prep or a body shop repair.
• Oxidation: the chalky, dull look older clear coat and single stage paint develops after years of Oregon sun and rain.
• Water spots and etching: mineral deposits and bird droppings that were left to bake in and have eaten a shallow crater into the clear coat.
• Light scratches and scuffs: the marks from keys, bags, fingernails around door handles and light brushes with hedges that have not gone through the clear coat.

Single stage vs multi stage correction

A single stage correction uses one polish and one pad combination across the whole vehicle. It removes most light swirl marks and haze and restores a large share of the gloss in one pass. It is the right choice for a well kept car that has picked up wash marring, for a new car straight from the dealership, and as preparation for a coating or film. This is the correction included in our Exterior Detail + Polish package.

A multi stage correction starts with a heavier cutting compound and pad to remove deeper defects, then refines the surface with one or more finer polishing steps to bring back clarity and remove the haze the cutting step leaves behind. Some panels may need spot wet sanding first. Multi stage work is quoted after inspection, because the number of steps depends on your paint's hardness, its color (black and dark metallic paints show every mark) and how much clear coat is available to work with. We never quote it blind.

What is included in Exterior Detail + Polish (from $499)

The package on our exterior and interior detailing page is priced from $499 and includes everything the paint needs before the polisher touches it:

• Two bucket hand wash with pH neutral soap and clean microfiber wash media.
• Hand wash of the wheels, wheel wells and tires.
• Paint decontamination with a clay bar treatment to pull embedded rail dust, brake dust and tree sap out of the clear coat.
• Single stage paint correction on every painted panel.
• A paint sealant applied to protect the corrected finish.

Why correction comes before ceramic coating and PPF

A ceramic coating and a paint protection film both lock in whatever is underneath them. Feynlab ceramic coatings bond chemically to the clear coat and add gloss and slickness, but they are only a few microns thick and cannot hide swirl marks; they seal them in for the 1, 3 or 5 year life of the coating. Global Films paint protection film is optically clear and self healing, which means a chip or a scuff in the film disappears with heat, but a swirl mark or a hologram under the film stays visible for the full 10 year warranty period. That is why every Feynlab ceramic coating package and every Global Films PPF installation at Custom Details starts with paint correction.

Correcting first also matters for adhesion. Clay bar decontamination and polishing leave a clean, oil free clear coat that a coating can bond to and a film can lay flat on, without contamination trapped along the edges.

What paint correction cannot fix

Clear coat is thin, typically only around the thickness of a sheet of paper, and every correction removes a little of it. We measure paint thickness with a paint depth gauge before we start, panel by panel, so we know how much clear coat is available and can stop before we create a bigger problem than the one we were fixing. Correction is not the answer for:

• Rock chips and scratches that reach the color coat, primer or bare metal. These need touch up paint or a repaint, and paint protection film is the way to prevent the next one.
• Clear coat that is already failing, peeling or crazing. Polishing it only accelerates the failure.
• Panels that have been heavily polished before and have little clear coat left. On these we may recommend a light gloss enhancement instead of a full correction.
• Deep etching from bird droppings or water spots that has gone through the clear coat.

Paint correction for Portland roads and weather

Portland is hard on paint in ways that are easy to miss until the car is under bright light. Nine months of rain leave water spots every time a car dries in the sun with road grime still on it, and the mineral rings etch into the clear coat if they sit for weeks. Douglas fir, maple and cottonwood drop sap and pollen from spring through fall, and sap that bakes on in August leaves a dull halo behind when it is finally removed. Winter gravel and sanding on US 26, I-5 and I-205 chip front ends and leave the fine pitting that a polish can soften but never remove, which is why so many of our correction customers pair the work with PPF on the hood and bumper. Add a few trips through a brush car wash and even a two year old car can look hazy and gray in direct sun.

Correction reverses the swirls, spotting and oxidation from all of that. Protection, in the form of a coating or film, keeps it from coming back as fast.

Aftercare for corrected paint

Corrected paint stays that way only if the washing habits that swirled it in the first place change. We walk every customer through the routine before the car leaves the shop:

• Wash with two buckets, a grit guard and a clean microfiber mitt, and dry with a plush towel or a blower rather than a chamois.
• Use a pH neutral car soap and skip drive through brush washes; touchless washes are acceptable in a pinch.
• Remove bird droppings, sap and bug remains as soon as you see them, before the sun bakes them in.
• Keep the sealant or coating maintained. A sealant from the $499 package lasts a few months; a Feynlab coating is the longer term answer.
• If the car was coated after correction, follow the coating cure guidance we give you and avoid washing for the first week.

How much does paint correction cost in Portland?

Multi stage correction is quoted after we inspect the paint and measure its thickness, because the amount of compounding and refining a car needs varies with its color, its clear coat and how it has been washed. If you want the interior handled in the same visit, the Full Detail + Polish package starts at $599.

How long does paint correction take?

Plan on a full day for a single stage correction, since the wash, decontamination and polishing steps cannot be rushed. Multi stage work usually runs two days or more depending on the size of the vehicle and how deep the defects are. We confirm the schedule when we quote the job, and pick-up and drop-off can be arranged if that makes the timing easier.

Is paint correction the same as polishing?

Polishing is the tool; paint correction is the result. A polish or compound on a machine pad levels the very top of the clear coat so that swirl marks, holograms, oxidation and light scratches stop catching the light. A quick gloss enhancement polish adds shine but removes little, while a true correction is measured, methodical and aimed at removing the defects themselves.

Will paint correction remove every scratch?

No. Correction removes defects that live in the clear coat. Rock chips, scratches that reach the color or primer, and clear coat that is already failing cannot be polished away because there is no clear coat left to level. We measure paint thickness before we start and tell you what will come out, what will only be softened, and what needs a touch up or repaint.

Do I need a ceramic coating after paint correction?

It is optional, but it is the smartest time to add one. Corrected paint is as clean and glossy as it will ever be, and a Feynlab ceramic coating locks that finish in with 1, 3 or 5 year warranty tiers. Paint protection film does the same job for the areas that take rock chips. Without protection, the finish will slowly pick up new swirl marks from washing.
